XENOSPHERE
Los Angeles, USA | 2024 | Completed
Xenosphere is an immersive installation developed for the Glendale Tech Week in Los Angeles. It explores the dissolution of the existing dichotomy of the natural and the technological. Drawing from insights by Theoretical Physicist and Astrobiologist Sara Walker, who states that "there is no ‘intelligence’ in isolation; rather, complex ecosystems of technologies interact with biology to bring about new capabilities," the installation envisions a planetary environment where the “technological” and the “natural” are perceived as one system forming an intricate web of life that spans the entire globe.
This concept is translated into the physical space by an array of evolving artifacts, each shaped by the same underlying coded logic but resulting in unique pieces influenced by external uncontrolled environmental parameters. Produced using 3D printing, these pieces are activated by interactive, pulsating lights that represent the flow of communication within this system. Visitors are invited to move beyond the need to categorize the elements as either technological or natural, and instead perceive them as interconnected agents of a single system, entangled, communicating, and evolving together.
The experience is further enhanced by dynamic animations of patterns and speculative organisms morphing into one another, depicting the fluidity of this interconnectedness. Abstract soundscapes complement the visuals, blending familiar and foreign noises, representing the ongoing dialogue within this landscape.
The installation is an invitation to embrace a collective shift in perception and write new narratives around the traditional notions of individuality, consciousness, and life itself and to reflect on how technology, rather than existing as a separate entity, can serve the greater web of life on a planetary scale.
