THERE IS A THIN LINE

Bilbao, Spain | 2022 | Completed

'There is a Thin Line' seeks to amplify silenced voices and evoke meaningful reflection through empathy, embodiment, and reciprocity. Saray Pérez Castilla's artist statement challenges the notion that the world's structure is defined by a simple boundary separating "your world" from "mine." Instead, the work invites us to question this division, urging a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness.

The artist delves into the notion that civilization is often founded on the suffering of others. In this work, Doric columns symbolize the pillars of civilization, while parasitic forms grow from them, signifying the exploitation and hidden cost beneath societal progress. These parasitic shapes are derived from 3D scans of debris found on the shores of southern Spain, remnants of shipwrecks carrying migrants from North Africa to Europe. These migrants, fleeing hardship in search of a better life, often face perilous journeys, with many tragically losing their lives in the process. The artwork confronts the viewer with the harsh realities of migration and the unseen human cost behind the pursuit of progress.
