PEMA CARE HEALING CENTER
Zanskar Valley, India | 2024 | In Progress
Located in the remote Zanskar Valley, Ladakh, the 27,225 sq ft Pema Care Healing Center is designed to provide holistic healthcare to the region’s 20,000+ residents. Inspired by local culture and architectural heritage, the center uses locally sourced materials, reflecting traditional craftsmanship while integrating modern and sustainable practices.
The design maximizes natural light and passive solar heating, essential for the harsh climate, and incorporates energy-efficient and environmentally conscious systems. Offering services like allopathy, naturopathy, physiotherapy, drug rehabilitation and traditional medicine, the center fosters a healing environment deeply connected to the landscape and the spiritual heritage of Zanskar. With a community center at its heart, Pema Care seeks to bring the village residents together, fostering connection and unity among the local people.
The masterplan is thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, weaving around existing farming areas, grazing fields, and water channels. This design approach allows local farmers to continue working the land, cows to graze freely, and water to flow uninterrupted. By embedding the architecture within the natural rhythms and activities of the village, the plan creates an immersive experience where visitors engage directly with the daily life and agricultural practices of the community.
Supported by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the center is a model of culturally respectful and sustainable architecture, blending modern healthcare with the natural beauty and traditions of the region.
